Fixing the Unfixable: Holden LFX SV6 Misfire Solved with Walnut Blasting

When it comes to stubborn engine issues, even the most experienced mechanics can sometimes hit a wall. That was exactly the case with this 2012 Holden SV6 LFX, which came into our shop with a permanent misfire that no amount of tuning, injector cleaning, or part swapping could resolve.

So, what was the culprit?
Carbon buildup. This LFX runs on Holden’s SIDI “Direct Injection” system—a great performance feature, but one that unfortunately makes intake valves prone to carbon deposits over time. Without fuel passing over the intake valves (as in port injection), oil vapor and debris gradually cake the intake runners and valve stems in sticky black soot.

The Solution: Walnut Blasting
After a recommendation from another trusted mechanic, the owner brought the car to Revhigh for a specialized walnut blasting carbon clean. This method uses finely crushed walnut shells—gentle on metal surfaces, but aggressive on carbon. The result? Clean intake valves, restored airflow, and a misfire that vanished like it was never there.
You can even see the telltale bits of brown walnut shell in the cleanup photos. The process may look a bit messy, but it’s one of the most effective (and safest) ways to revive a direct-injected engine.

Thinking Your Holden Might Need the Same?
If you’ve been battling poor idle, misfires, reduced performance, or fuel economy that’s worse than usual, it might be time for a carbon clean. We offer walnut blasting as part of our intake cleaning services—check out the carbon cleaning section on our website for more details.
