Unlocking the LFX: From Flat Top-End to 209.8kW at the Wheels

The 2016 Holden LFX is a solid platform straight from factory, but like most naturally aspirated setups, the real gains come from refining airflow and getting the calibration right. This build is a perfect example of how much potential can be left on the table when the tune isn’t dialed in properly.

How It Came In
This LFX had already been tuned elsewhere, but something wasn’t quite right. On the dyno, the numbers told part of the story—186.7kW at the wheels—but the way the car drove made it clear there were underlying issues.
The biggest problem? The tune was running too rich in the top end.
That meant:
Power falling off earlier than it should
Inefficient combustion
Sluggish response at higher RPM
Instead of pushing forward, we took a step back and approached the car properly.

The Right Foundation
Before touching the tune, we focused on improving airflow and engine efficiency:
Intake manifold porting to improve air delivery
High flow cats to reduce restriction in the exhaust
Upgraded mufflers for better flow and sound
Walnut blasting to clean carbon buildup and restore performance
These upgrades aren’t just about peak power—they allow the engine to breathe properly, which is critical on the LFX platform.

The Retune
With the hardware sorted, it was time to recalibrate everything.
We corrected the overly rich top-end fueling, refined ignition timing, and optimised the overall map to suit the new setup. The goal wasn’t just to chase numbers, but to deliver smooth, usable power across the entire rev range.

The Result
Back on the dyno, the difference was clear:
Before: 186.7kW at the wheels
After: 209.8kW at the wheels
That’s a solid gain, but more importantly, it completely changed how the car behaves.

More Than Just Numbers
What really stands out is the driving experience.
The car now:
Pulls cleanly all the way through the top end
Responds instantly to throttle input
Feels stronger and more consistent under load
Where it once felt flat up high, it now pulls like a freight train right through the rev range.
Final Thoughts
This build highlights something we see all the time—a tune can make or break a setup.
Even with decent hardware, a poor calibration can hold everything back. But when the right parts are matched with the right tuning approach, the results speak for themselves.
From a car that wasn’t living up to its potential to a properly dialed-in 209.8kW setup, this LFX is now performing exactly how it should.
And as always—this is just the beginning.
